The Legacies Project: August Y Media Works Video Project Dates Announced

Y Media Works Summer Institute 2010 has come and gone (we’ll be posting the student work here soon!). But for those who wanted to take part but couldn’t for one reason or another, we are offering a limited, project-based experience during the month of August. We are continuing our work with our friends at Nice Work Public Media and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, creating brief documentary videos from a series of interviews with elders from the community. The Legacies Project “will familiarize students with the techniques of digital media production as well as local and national history. The project will entail training in video production techniques, student acquisition of interviews on videotape, and the production and display of short documentaries using student-acquired media” (from the program plan).

This limited project, which runs Monday through Friday, August 9 through August 26, will require students to register for one of three available 2 1/2 hour time slots during the day:

Group 1 – 9a-11:30a
Group 2 – 12n-2:30p
Group 3 – 3p-5:30p

The final videos will be shown at a special event, open to the public, at the Museum of African American History.

Announcing Y-Arts Summer Camp 2010!

Information about the 2010 Y-Arts summer camp, including registration details, has been posted to our Web site on the Camps page! We are excited to share what we have in store.

The camp, which is entitled the Y Media Works Summer Institute 2010, runs 5 weeks, from June 28 through July 30, 2010, and a commitment to all 5 weeks is required. During the first week, campers will stay overnight from Monday through Friday at Camp Ohiyesa in Holly, MI, for an intensive team building experience in the outdoors. Activities such as swimming, canoeing, and high ropes will be offered during the day; our evenings will be spent learning about the media production process and planning our productions. After we come back from the July 4 holiday, the remaining four weeks of camp will be spent in teams creating a variety of digital media for local community partners (our clients!). Camp will run from 9am to 4pm, Monday through Thursday.

Space is limited, so the application process will be very competitive.

Detroit Free Press Grant Provides For a More High Tech Media Camp

Campers at the Y Arts 2009 Summer Media Camp are getting hands-on experience with new high definition video technology thanks to a grant from the Detroit Free Press’ 17th annual Summer Dreams program. Together with the Skillman Foundation, the Free Press raises money for summer camps “that give kids opportunities to experience and enjoy life in new and exciting ways.” Y Arts put the award they received this year toward several high definition video cameras to create the camp’s main media project, a 30 minute pilot episode for a healthy choices-themed children’s show. Students aged 12 to 18 are filming the magazine-style show’s segments, all of which are conceptualized and produced entirely during the six week camping experience.

Y Arts is delivering the camp in partnership with the Macomb County Abstinence Partnership (MCAP) and the East Michigan Environmental Action Council (EMEAC). Each partner is delivering a complete curriculum to the camp, giving kids the tools to make healthy choices when confronted with drugs, alcohol, and sexual activity (MCAP’s portion), as well as a smart respect for our local environment and investigations into issues of environmental justice (EMEAC’s portion). The kids use the information and knowledge gained from these groups as the subject matter of their video and other media, which they learn to produce from the Y Arts team of multimedia and visual artists.
