  1. Hi Gillian,

Congratulations on all your work in Detroit’s arts community, especially your fine work with the Y Arts media curriculum. Very inspirational. Bravo.

Here’s a link to a YouTube site that may interest you. Letters to a Young Filmmaker (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-UpWU3K9Bw&feature=related) is a series of six mini-lectures pulled from a presentation I gave on video production and storytelling at Christopher Coppola’s popular PAH-FEST: Motown ’09, held recently at Madonna University:

    1. The Sixty Percent Incentive. The “other” reason why filmmakers tell their stories and make their movies in Michigan.
    2. In Search of the Good Stuff. How to find the heart of every story.
    3. Feeding your Fire. How to improve your chances for career success even when you’re just starting out.
    4. Write-a-Mins. What every storyteller takes when he/she wants to write with power and grace.
    5. Are You the One? And other questions I ask interns and production assistants before I hire them.
    6. The Eighth Most Important First Rule of Storytelling. What every filmmaker needs to know before starting his/her next project

Many of the core ideas in these Letters are based on what I now call The Ten Most Important First Rules of Storytelling, a personalized writing and communications tool that has driven so much of my video production and story consulting work, as well as my teaching. The Ten Most Important First Rules of Storytelling is designed to take the broccoli out of learning how to write while restoring a sense of playfulness and purpose to the process.

Feel free to pass these links on to friends, students, or colleagues you think may find them of value. Your friends on Facebook, MySpace, Linkedin, Twitter, etc. may appreciate the entertainment as well as educational value of Letters.

    Thanks, Gillian. And enjoy….
