“How can I keep from singing?” asks the old Quaker hymn.

Join in song with the Deep River Community Choir, the YMCA’s voice of praise, protest and essential American music. The incomparable Bobbi Thompson directs our choir which performs throughout the metro Detroit area.

Our Choir is free to join and open to the public, so meet us on Friday nights at 6pm at the Boll Family YMCA for rehearsal. Call 313.223.2743 for more information.

We’ve just released our first album featuring original songs by Rev. Robert Jones, Matt Watroba…

The YMCA Deep River Choir released its first CD in November, 2008, a year after the eclectic community-based choir was organized by YArts under the direction of Bobbi Thompson.

The CD, “Songs of Praise & Promise,” features original works by acclaimed roots music performers and educators Matt Watroba and the Rev. Robert Jones. Also included is “Shine Right Through the Dark,” a song written and recorded by Watroba in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King.

Deep River Choir Album Cover“For more than 300 years, Detroit and its river have been a destination for people of every nationality searching for freedom and opportunity,” said Gillian Eaton, vice president of YArts, a program extension of the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit at the Boll Family YMCA. “Just as the Detroit River symbolizes the common hopes of these seekers, the YMCA Deep River Choir celebrates the common spirit that continues to inspire and unify our diverse and storied community.”

All proceeds of “Songs of Praise & Promise” will benefit YArts to help underwrite the YMCA Deep River Choir and other community programming and outreach activities. For more information about the CD’s release, or to find out how to purchase the CD, please contact Y Arts.

  1. Speaking as a choir member who has been with the group since the beginning, I have to say that singing for the dedicated adminstrators of free health clinics in the midwest, was one of the most enjoyable concerts that I have done with the choir. It was also for me, the discharge of a debt or obligation. I am a consumer of services of one of the free medical clinics in the city of Detroit. Its timel;y intervention a couple of years ago may have kept me from having a heart attack or stroke. We sing best when we are singing to those who are serving!
